Building a Bogie

The project was to design and build two Bogies ( Go Carts ) for Interest Link Border (Roxburgh Branch)  . The project consisted of designing and building the bogies then taking them apart in order that the membera of the group could then put them back together again in three 2 hour sessions hosted at Ruberslaw Wild Woods Camping

I roped in my Father In Law whose expertise and Welding skill were invaluable. So we thought up a rough design and got sanding on some bits of wood he had lying about. We struggled to find tyres unil we came across a fantastic charity in Tweedbank Just Cycle who kindly donated us some wheels. 

A bit of welding and time and the wheels were attached to round bar and simply fitted with a couple of custom brackets and some screw through the axle to stop it turning meaning the wheels spun in their bearings.

Here is a photo of the gang rebuilding the Bogie. Everyone got involved and it was a huge success.

The Build Team , wait no steering or brakes! 

We threaded rope through an eye ring to avoid hitting the tyres when steering and the brakes work on a foot pedal sprung under the bogie to press two pads on the back wheels.

There is a bit more filming to do then I intend to sand the bogies down probably finish in linseed oil then sell on ebay with profits going to the Charity. I will post link here when they are for sale and a couple more pictures.

Trees, Alaskan Mill, Furniture

Trees

I am becoming obsessed with trees, I have just got my chainsaw Ticket so can fell and cross cut legally. I am looking to buy an Alaskan Mill so I can Fell, Mill and then build furniture. I looking to plant a load of harwoods to balance out some sort of stability in the world.

The General idea being that I can create my own furniture from start to finish.

Anyone who wishes to share their advice on the milling of wood and especially how to run an efficient stack yard please share your thoughts.

In my local area there is a train line being built (Edinburgh to Galashiels) and all trees and going in the Chipper what a waste, let the wood workers at it!.

Cantilever Table Alive nearly.?!

The Cantilever table is up for the first time and didn't fall apart woop woop!! There is a slope to the desktop which needs to be rectified. This may be to do with mad scientists/cabinet makers getting some angles/measurements wrong; however progress is there for all to see. I think the base is to long at the front but generally quite attractive piece, will be adding the veneer to the MDF desk top I am know thinking of using rosewood with a sycamore Marquetry.

The first picture shows first attempt at legs now all corrected with collars around base. The rest show as it is now although there remains a slant in the desk.

Design Of Cantilever Desk

The Cantilever desk has obvious problems of balance. I have tried to counter balance the desk with a support that runs along the floor and this seems to have stopped tipping problem at least on the model....

I plan to do the desk top, and shelves in veneer on MDF this means I can have incredible looking dark wood for the desk top. I am currently thinking Rose Wood, Macassar Ebony or Walnut. Macassar Ebony I think is the way i am going to go. The supporting struts will be Sycamore as will the base to off set the darkness of the desk top and shelves and for weight and strength.

Any balance issues that occur on the full size piece should be easily rectifiable through adding weight...I hope...

Diamond Shaped Octagon Table

This table was designed around the concept of a Table to sit under a Mirror at the bottom of the stairs. Just for some idea it will be a metre in height. Main issues have been amount of planing to create angles around base and table top. This piece is a labour and love and is in no way financially practical, however the final piece will be fantastic!

This is the original piece the table was shaped out of (Cherry).

Note the Draws will have no handles and work on a push mechanism so to retain shape of table top all the way around.

Replacing Seat on Sheraton Country Chair

Replacing Seat at Chippendale Furniture School, here we have a Sheraton Country Chair,the seat has been replaced with Ash. The Ash was dried using a heat gun to match the shape of the chair. From there it was glued and pegged using Japanese Pegs Here are some pictures of the Chair being colour matched using coffee,Van dyke and other water based colours.
